Drug Treatment 101

Drug Treatment 101Did you know that more than 22 million persons in the United States today suffer from a drug or an alcohol abuse problem? With this many people who are embattled by a drug addiction or a drinking problem in our great nation during the present day, it is not a wonder that leading organizations like the US Department of Health and Human Services have declared September (of 2010) to be ‘Recovery Month.’ According to their website, Recoverymonth.gov, the mission statement is rather vast and impressive. One that embodies commending both the courteous and friendly—specialized drug treatment 101 staffs that are saving lives daily—and one that also celebrates those who have sought out effective treatment for an addiction to drugs at such Raleigh Durham drug rehab centers.

They state on their website that, “Recovery Month provides a platform to celebrate people in recovery and those who serve them. Each September, thousands of treatment programs around the country celebrate their successes and share them with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues in an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it works, for whom, and why. Substance abuse treatment providers have made significant accomplishments, having transformed the lives of untold thousands of Americans. These successes often go unnoticed by the broader population; therefore, Recovery Month provides a vehicle to celebrate these successes.”

More People are Addicted to Drugs in the US Then You May Think

To better shed some light on the issue that is at hand, and how rampant and widespread the abuse of drugs are in the US currently, a recent report that was conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), revealed some rather startling numbers. According to the report there are nearly eight million people (or around 3.3 percent of the US population ages 12 and older) that required treatment for drug abuse or drug addiction this past year, and 18.6 million, (or around 7.9 percent of the entire US population) that currently requires drug rehab for a severe alcohol problem in this present year.

After the release of the report, HHS Secretary, Tommy G. Thompson stated, “There is no other medical condition for which we would tolerate such huge numbers unable to obtain the treatment they need. We need to enact President Bush’s Access to Recovery Program to provide treatment to those who seek to recover from addiction and move on to a better life. That is what Recovery Month is all about.”
